Zest for Life - Thomas Adams/Mirui Partnership
Charity Details
The idea of naming a rose as a fundraising tool and enlisting the support of World of Roses has been developed by the parents of Ross Jones, a former student of Thomas Adams School. Ross was tragically killed in a road traffic accident in January 2005. Thomas Adams School, College and Boarding House is situated in rural North Shropshire in the small market town of Wem. The School has formed a working Partnership with Miriu Secondary School in Kenya.

Miriu is a poorly resourced school set in a remote rural area near Lake Victoria that sees few Europeans, very few tourists and represents the 'real' Kenya. The school has a teaching staff of nine; student numbers vary from 120 to 200 with attendance at the school costing £120 per year, an enormous amount to the majority of the community.

The Partnership Project has been growing steadily throughout the last year. So far they have:
" Raised £7000 for a general fund of which £3,200 has been used to install solar power and provide computers to for Internet access and web cam links.
" Had parents and supporters of school come forward to sponsor over 40 orphans.
" Established a scholarship has been to allow one Kenyan student to study at Thomas Adams School for two years with a free place in the Boarding House and all expenses paid.
" Organised Letters, photographic and video exchanges as well as joint initiatives in Art, English, Maths, Music, Geography and the environment.

Since launching the rose at the Hampton Court Palace Flower Show in July 2006 a total of £1390 has been raised from rose sales and a raffle of first year rose plants.
