Brand New Rose named for Whiskey lovers!
Malt whisky fans and gardeners alike may be keen to learn about the first rose to be named after a single malt - The Balvenie Rose.
The rose, a red floribunda variety has been named in honour of the whiskys latest new product The Balvenie Rose, created to celebrate the long history of Balvenie Castle, the annual rent of which was fixed at a single red rose in 1460.
The Balvenie Distillery in Speyside is built in the shadow of the now ruined Balvenie Castle. In the 15th Century the Castle was owned by the Fair Maid of Galloway, Margaret Douglas but following the rebellion of the infamous Black Douglasses against the King, all of the familys titles and estates were forfeit to the Crown. The King however, was so taken with Margarets beauty, that he reinstated her at Balvenie Castle for the unusual annual rent.
Rob Macpherson, The Balvenie Ambassador said: The wonderful story of Margaret Douglas and the single rose rent of Balvenie Castle inspired us to create The Balvenie Rose 16 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky but we decided that to do the story real justice we should also name a red rose in honour of this historic tale.
Simon Cowell helps launch the Imagine Rose.
Our brand new rose 'Imagine', which raises money for Against Breast Cancer, was launched a few weeks ago, during a champagne reception held on the historic R S Hispanola on the River Thames in London.
X Factor presenter Simon Cowell, Patron of Against Breast Cancer, hosted the event and was joined by model Danielle Lloyd and ninety corporate and regular donors to the charity for a fantastic evening.
Pictured right is Simon, with his mother Julie and Margaret Spittle, trustee of Against Breast Cancer, who also helped Julie through her treatment when she had breast cancer.
